How Do You Install Gear Sensor? (Front & Rear)

How Do You Install A Bafang Gear Sensor

Most electric bike riders like to get the most performance out of their electric bike and the nice thing about electric bikes is that you can make a few additions to the bike to get great performance and also a longer life of the electric bike parts.

Today, we will share in this post one of these additions that can give the electric bike more great performance, which is the shift gear sensor.

We will discuss the method of installing the shift gear sensor for Bafang motors, which is one of the best  Conversion kits currently on the market.

As for the Bafang motors, it comes in most models with a shift gear sensor and its installation is optional, such as the Bafang BBS02 motor.

But recently, Bafang released some models that do not come with the gear shift sensor, such as the M625.

Given the importance of this sensor, we will share in this post a method of installing a shift gear sensor in the Kits that comes with a shift gear sensor which is called the rear method.

We will also explain how to install the shift gear sensor in models that do not have a shift gear sensor, and it is called the front method.

What is the shift gear sensor & how could it help?

The shift gear sensor’s job is to cut off the electricity to the motor while using the shifter, and it does this by sensing the movement of the shifter wire. If it burns, it cuts off the electrical current to the motor.

The Shift Gear Senior helps you to facilitate smooth movement on the cassette during shifting, which reduces pressure on the chain and extends the life of the cassette, and also makes it easier to ride an electric bike in general.

Required tools

  1.  Shift Gear Senior ( if comes with Bafang Kit if not you should buy one)
  2. Wire cutter (preferably dedicated to bicycles)
  3. screwdrivers.

Step-by-step guide for Installing A Bafang Gear Sensor on The Rear of ebike.

1- Cut the derailleur shift wire cap using a wire cutter, then loosen the shifter cable with a screwdriver.

2- Use your finger to loosen the housing out so you will be able to pull the shifting wire.

3- Pull the shifter cable by unscrewing the brake lever using a screwdriver (depending on your brake lever you may have two screws or a different method to pull the cable)

Note: most probably this is a plastic screw so be careful not to break it.

4-Give the shifting cable a little push so you have space to pull it out.

5-The next step for you is to determine where to place the gear shift sensor on the electric bike frame (the place should be away from any movement of your feet or from the chain and also a hidden place to maintain the aesthetic shape of the ebike and also close enough to the motor cable)

6-Now we want to put the sensor in the housing cable, and for this, we will cut the housing to the same size as the sensor (measure the size of the sensor and cut the housing).

7- Now we are going to put the shift wire back in its place.

8-we will pass the shift wire inside the sensor  (don’t forget to put the sensor cap before sliding the shift wire in the gear sensor)

9-pass the shift wire inside the second part of the housing cable.

How Do You Install A Bafang Gear Sensor? The Front Method.

In this part of the post, we will share together how to install the gear sensor on the front of the electric bike.

This method is suitable in the event that the kit does not support the gear sensor, as is the case in some Bafang models.

On the other hand, this method is very easy and does not require much effort.

However,  the disadvantage of this method is that you will need a Y-Splitter 1T2 Cable, which will cost you about 7 $ in addition to the price of the sensor.

6-Put the cap on the housing then connect the sensor and start inserting the shift wire

7-Pass the shift wire inside the sensor and then plug the cable into place in the normal way (as we explained earlier).

8-Disconnect the brake cable that is connected to the motor.

9- Connect your Y-Splitter 1T2 Cable to the brake connecter that is coming from the motor.

10-Connect the Brake cable to one side of the splitter.

11-Connect your gear sensor to the splitter.

12- Now you are good to go.
