How Do You Test An e-bike Throttle? (Step by Step)

Hall Effect Sensor Testing steps

The electric bike throttle test is one of the easiest tests that you can do at home without the need for any help because the internal components of the throttle are not complicated at all.

But you may ask why I should think about doing a Throttle test when I can replace it?  especially its price is not expensive and the answer here is that even if the price of Throttle is inexpensive, you can test and repair it while you are at home without the need for any additional expenses.

So why spend on something that you can repair?!

And before we start the test, let’s start to know the basic components inside the throttle in order to know what you will test.

What are the internal components of ebike throttle?

As we mentioned earlier, the components of throttle in an electric bike are not complicated and in fact, they are two main components.

The first is the effective hall sensor which is responsible for controlling the increase in voltage when twisting the throttle.

The second is the inner coil spring, which is responsible for the movement of the throttle itself.

In the next lines, we will test the two main components of the electric bike.

How Do You Test An e-bike Throttle?

As a general rule, the throttle can be tested using the multimeter by placing the positive lead of the millimeter on the green wire of the throttle and the negative lead on the black wire, provided that the output of the throttle is between .8 volts and 5 volts.

Now let’s get into the details of the test, the parts of the throttle

Testing the hall effect sensor in the ebike throttle.

In order to test the hall effect sensor in ebike the throttle, we will need the following tools:

1- Multimeter.
2- DC power 4.3 – 5 Volt  (3 AA batteries).

DC power 4.3 – 5 Volt  (3 AA batteries): You can make this battery by connecting 3 AA batteries, and if you don’t know, you can get it from any old children’s toy.

We will first make the cable connections in order to start the test.

1- Connect the black wire in the throttle to the negative side of the electrical current.
2- Connect the red wire in the throttle to the positive side of the electrical current.
3- Connect the green end of the positive lead to the multimeter.

1-Set the meter to 5 volts or closest to it (depending on your multimeter).

2- Place the negative lead of the multimeter on the black wire (negative side).

3- Check the reading of the millimeter and the correct reading should be between .8 and 5 volts.

4- Twist the throttle to see if the reading changed or not.

Note: if the reading numbers increased this means the sensor is working probably but if the number didn’t increase this means the sensor is not working and needs to be replaced.

The coil spring test for the E-bike throttle.

The aim of this test is to make sure that the coil spring has no fracture and that it is in its correct place.

The throttle coil spring test does not require any tools, and here are the steps in detail.
  1. Disconnect the throttle cables from the controller so that they are not connected to any source of electrical current.
  2. Using your hand, twist the throttle slowly and listen carefully to the movement of the throttle as the goal here is to listen to the movement until we are sure that there are no broken parts of the coil spring.
  3.  The second stage is to twist the throttle strongly and then leave it once. The aim of this test is to ensure the strength of the reaction to the coil spring.

How to Fix Ebike throttle?

As a general rule, the electric bike throttle can be fixed by replacing the effect hall sensor or changing the internal coil spring.

Replacing the throttle coil spring.

Changing the coil spring does not require any complicated tools. All you will need is a screwdriver to open the throttle, then remove the old coil spring and replace it with a new one.

Note: You can get coil springs from Amazon, where they are sold in sets of different sizes.

Replacing effect hall sensor.

In order to change the effect hall sensor, you will need the following tools

1- screwdriver
2- soldering iron
3- new effect hall sensor
4- grease.
