How To Install Ignition Switch On Ebike

Installing an ignition switch for an electric bicycle is not common in the vicinity of electric cyclists, but in fact, it is very important for several reasons that we will explain later in this post.

I personally installed it for a friend and it did not take more than 15 minutes, but I was actually surprised by how important it is, especially

for individuals who have ebike conversion kit

Reasons Why Installing Ignition Switch On Ebike is a good idea.

1- Another layer of ebike protection.

whatever your type of electric bike, its price was not cheap when buying. We are talking about prices starting at $400, like the Jetson bike,

and up to more than $8000, and since the theft of electric bikes is widespread (we are talking about an incident of theft every 30 seconds)

Protecting your  Electrical bike against theft is very important.

Therefore, adding another layer of protection via the ignition switch may be a good idea because it will make the bike more difficult to be stolen.

2- It will help you not to lose your ebike key.

When you lose the key to the electric bike, it becomes confusing and difficult, especially if you do not have a spare key.

Having an ignition key in the electric bike will help you not to lose any of the keys to the electric bike because your mind will get used to the fact that there must be a key to ride the bike just like the car.

Will save you Money.

There are types of ignition keys that come with an anti-theft alarm, and this means that you will save the value of buying a separate alarm for your electric bike and get it almost for free, especially since the price of the ignition key does not exceed 40 dollars.

How To Install Ignition Switch On Ebike?

The ignition switch is installed on the ebike by connecting it to the start-up Connector, which is a 3-pin connector that has a three wires which are usually colored Red, Green, and Black.

The goal of this connection is to make the intermediate ignition switch responsible for delivering the electric current, as in normal the start-up connector is connected all the time, which causes the electric current to be connected to the electric bike screen as soon as you press the power button

A step-by-step guide to installing Ignition Switch On Ebike.

  • Remove the battery from the electric bike.
  • Remove the controller from inside the electric bike frame.
  • Search for the 3-pin connector.

connector which is responsible for starting the electrical current

  • Connect the connector of the ignition switch to the 3-pin connector

Connect the connector of the ignition switch to the 3-pin connector

  • Put the controller back in place on the electric bike
  • Put the battery
  • Start the bike with the key

How to wire the ignition switch to the ebike controller.

Wiring ignintion switch

In some cases, there is no 3-pin connector in the controller in order to connect it to the ignition switch, and in this case, we will have to connect the wires manually.

The general idea of this method is to insert three wires female Terminal Connectors into the controller and to weld between the wires responsible for starting up the electric bike and between the connector.

So that we can then connect the ignition switch cable to the female Terminal Connectors controller.

Tools :

  • Screw
  • soldering iron
  • three wires female terminal Connectors

Steps.

  • Remove the battery from the electric bike.
  • Remove the controller from inside the electric bike frame.
  • Remove the controller cover with a screwdriver
  • Look for the thin red wires (as shown in the picture).
  • Cut the first thin red cable with either of the two female connector cables and then solder them together

Cut the first thin red cable with either of the two female connector cables and then solder them together

  • Solder the remaining wire (note the order is not important)
  • Close the lid of the controller
  • Connect the ignition switch connector with the female connector

Conclusion.

The ignition switch is installed on the electric bike by connecting its connector to the 3-pin connector in the controller.

In the event that there is no 3-pin connector in the controller, a female connector is used and the wire is welded with the internal wire of the connector so that you can connect the ignition switch.
