Why Does My Rear eBike Wheel Wobbles? (Explained)

Rear eBike Wheel Wobbles

The wobble of the rear wheel on an electric bike, especially if it has a hub motor, is a frequent problem for electric bike riders.

Although the problem may be annoying, whether it is from the annoying sound or the instability of the electric bike on the road, the solution to this problem is easy and can be done at home.

That’s why in this post we will explain the reasons for the rear wheel wobble in an electric bike and also how to solve this problem.

Why Does My Rear eBike Wheel Wobbles?

As a general rule, there are 5 reasons that make the wheel of an electric bike wobble :

  1. Spokes are loosening.
  2. The wheel needs to be true.
  3. The cassette lock is not tightened
  4. The Axle is  broken
  5. The Axle is bent

Now let’s take every cause of the rear wheel wobble and figure out how to solve this problem

1-Spokes are loosening.

The spokes in an electric bike are twice the thickness of the spokes in regular bikes, in order to be able to bear the weight of the motor

(in the case of a hub motor).

One of the most common reasons that cause the rear wheel to wobble and hear the clicking sound while riding an electric bike is that the spokes are loose.

Also, it should be noted here that the spokes do not have to be completely loose in order to cause the rear wheel to wobble, so you should do a careful check of the spokes and to check the spokes you can check them on your hands making sure the spokes are well connected.

Or by hearing the sound of the spokes so that the sound of the spokes has a higher frequency.

You can also use some of the applications on the mobile that measure the spoke’s sound frequency.

2-The wheel needs to be true.

The second reason that may cause the rear wheel to wobble is that the wheel needs to be true.

you can find out this by looking at the middle of the wheel while spinning the wheel, and if you notice the wheel touching the brake pad, this means in most cases that the wheel needs to be trued.

The process of correcting the wheel requires advanced tools and experience, so it is preferable to use one of the bicycle shops near you.

But if you cannot go to the bicycle shop for any reason, you can follow the following method to true your ebike wheel at home.

How to true ebike wheel at home?

1- Put your ebike upside down.

2-Stand in front of the rear wheel.

3-Look at the middle of the wheel (between the brake pads).

4-Using your hands, spin the rear wheel slowly.

5- Notice which side of the wheel wobbling (right or left)

6- Locate the place on the wheel that touches the brake.

7-Specify the number of spokes in this place (must be an even number)

8-If the wheel is wobbling to the right, fasten the spokes opposite where it touches the brake (from the left).

9-If the wheel is wobbling to the left, fasten the spokes opposite where it touches the brake (from the right).

10-spin the rear wheel slowly to see if the rear wheel is wobbling gone or not.

Note: This method will true the wheel by 80%. if you need more accuracy you need to visit the nearest bike shop.

3-The cassette lock is not tightened.

If the cassette lock is not properly tightened, it will cause the rear wheel to wobble.

The solution in this situation is to tighten the lock well.

You can know if the cassette lock is the cause of the rear wheel wobble or not by monitoring the shifting gear because if the cassette lock is not well tightened, the chain will not be able to stay on to the gear and therefore the shifting will be difficult.

4-The Axle is  broken

If the axle of the rear wheel is broken, it will cause the wheel to wobble.

You can know if the axle is broken by the way the rear wheel is wobbling. If it does not complete a full turn when turning and you hear a cracking sound, in this case, you must go to the nearest bike shop.

5-The Axle is bent

If the axle of the rear wheel is bent, it will cause the wheel to wobble. You can know if the axle is bent by the way the rear wheel is wobbling.

You may notice a slight to moderate wobble depending on the degree of curvature of the axle itself.

However, it should be noted that in the case the axle is bent, the degree of wobbling is much higher than in the case of untightened Spokes or when the wheel needs to be trued.
