When buying a used electric bike, one of the things to keep in mind is the ebike mileage.
The reason why this point is important is that it gives you a quick idea of the condition of the ebike in general and the condition of the motor and battery in particular.
But in order to know whether the miles traveled are too much or not, the matter is considered somewhat complicated, given that the watt-hour differs in the same battery capacity.
For example, you can find a 48 volt 10 amp battery, which will give you 480 watt-hours
The same 48-volt 12-amp battery will give you 576 watt-hours
So it is possible that the same miles numbers are different on an ebike with the same battery but different amps.
Which will not reflect the actual condition of the ebike
Of course, there are other factors that will reduce/increase the miles traveled by ebike, such as the type of road, the weight of the rider, and the extent of wind resistance.
That is why in this post we decided to do a study on the average number of miles that an ebike can travel in one year.
You can use this average after knowing the age of the electric bike to find out if the used electric bike you are about to buy is high mileage, medium, or low.
Note: we highly recommend checking this full guide for how to buy a well-used ebike.
How To Buy A Used ebike? The Best Tips
Study general Guide.
- The motor power and battery capacity will be the factor that we will look at to determine the mileage
- With the driver’s weight fixed between 160 and 220 pounds, (this category is considered the general average of weights) and also most electric bikes support this weight
- We will assume that the atmosphere in which the bicycle is being ridden is suitable without any wind resistance
- The wheel size of the ebike will be assumed to be 26 inches because it is considered the middle class
- During the study, we will target the electric bike motor as a first factor to determine the miles traveled by the electric bike
- This study relies on the driver’s style of riding a bike based on throttle only or using the PAS at the highest speed
- total wattt hours has been caluctalted as Battery voltage * Amps = tottal watt\hr
- Expected range per one battery charge has been calculated as tottal (watt\hr) \ (highest speed)
- In this study, we relied on a previous study we conducted to determine the expected range of a single charge
- we found that the expected life of the battery is about 1000 charges within 5 years, which is equivalent to 200 charges per year
The study that determines the expected range of a single charge in the battery can be viewed

What Is Considered High Mileage For A used 250-watt ebike ?
250-watt electric bikes are considered a small category and have a maximum speed of about 15 miles, but this speed is not achieved in normal riding conditions
Therefore, based on most of the observations of this bike, its maximum speed in practice is 12 or 13 miles per hour, which is equivalent to 20 km / h
On the other hand, this type of bike has a 36-volt battery and rarely has a 48-volt or 52 battery
The following table shows the highest mileage per year for an ebike with a 250-watt motor and a 36-volt battery
Volt | Ambs | watt\hr | Pedaling | Road type, nature & wind | Cyclist weight | Wheel size | Highest Speed | Excepted LifeSpan per one charge | Number of charging times per year | Expected mileage per year |
36 | 13 | 468 watt\hr | Top PAS assist or Full throttle | City Road, no wind | 160lbs to 220lbs | 26inches | 20KM/hr | 20KM | 200 | 4000KM\2485 Miles |
36 | 15 | 540 watt\hr | Top PAS assist or Full throttle | City Road, no wind | 160lbs to 220lbs | 26inches | 20KM/hr | 23KM | 200 | 4600KM\2858 Miles |
36 | 17.5 | 630 watt\hr | Top PAS assist or Full throttle | City Road, no wind | 160lbs to 220lbs | 26inches | 20KM/hr | 38KM | 200 | 7600KM\4722 Miles |
36 | 20 | 720 watt\hr | Top PAS assist or Full throttle | City Road, no wind | 160lbs to 220lbs | 26inches | 20KM/hr | 43KM | 200 | 8600KM\5343 Miles |
The numbers in the previous table show the maximum mileage of the 250-watt ebike, which means that on average the numbers should be less than this
If you are buying an electric bike of this category and the mileage is higher than the previous figures (in one year), this is evidence that the bike is very worn out and will require high maintenance.

Study Conclusion.
The numbers mentioned in this study represent the maximum mileage in one year according to the capacity of the ebike motor and also the capacity of the battery
If you are going to buy a used electric bike, you should expect the bike mileage to be less than the maximum numbers, but if you find numbers higher than the numbers mentioned in this study, this is evidence that the bike is not in good condition
